The idea is smart : fit crampons on the Low Tech inserts of a ski touring boot. One shoud have thought about that ! Martin Volken, mountain guide, did. The result is the Tech Crampons 250.
picture : proguiding.comThe concept is simple : the mini crampons are tightened with the Low Tech inserts under the front sole of a ski touring boot. The way to use them is simple too : light ski mountaineering, for climbing steep couloirs that can not be skinned up, and tours during which crampons can be useful or not.
Watching the video, one inconvenience is blindingly obvious : the crampons have to be tightened with a screwdriver. There are no spring system like the one you find on light ski touring bindings. So it would be better not to be going flat out putting the crampons on.
Anyway, Martin Volken show they are good on ice. As long as you don’t want to go down a steep slope or don’t want to use more than front spikes, these crampons are an interesting innovation that shoud give some ideas to outdoor equipment brands.
The Tech Crampons 250 are available at 115US$ here.
